During the Seven Years War in North America,  which started in 1754, the British realised that their regular army was not suitable for fighting an enemy in the woodland wilderness. The dense forests and mountainous terrain required fighting men who knew the habits of the enemy and could serve effectively as scouts and skirmishers. Men from local communities were recruited to join these special forces 'Ranger' companies. The New Hampshireman Robert Rogers formed the most well known of these ranger companies.
